Benefits of Functional Training
Functional training exercises challenge motions that closely copy the body’s everyday activities for the purpose of improving that activity. Examples of desired functional activities may include hiking in the mountains, running a marathon, playing basketball, or walking through a grocery store. A functional training program integrates the four major components of a balanced exercise program: flexibility exercises, balance training, resistance exercises, and aerobic exercises. Functional training exercises are not the isolated action of any one joint movement. Instead, they integrate multiple joint movements, such as functional stepping drills. Functional training exercises are important because they enhance the quality of our lives by improving daily function.
A functional training program should be part of a lifelong exercise program and should be practiced at least once a week.
